Brunel University Exclusive Event

On Friday 10th March 2023 a combination of patients, carers and clinical nurse specialists attended Brunel University for an exclusive event that had been facilitated by Dr Emmanouil Karteris from Brunel University.

The event was really informative with some amazing short presentations given on various subjects. We would like to thank the speakers for the time and effort they put in to ensure that the day was enjoyed by all.

The speakers consisted of:

  1. Prof. Jo Bridger, Head of cenGem; General Introduction

  2. Dr Emmanouil Karteris: Use of liquid biopsies as diagnostic and prognostic tools

  3. Dr Nabeel Khan: Use of IDEAS software

  4. Alice Filipe: The clinical utility of cfDNA in cancer

  5. Dr Sayeh Saravi: Investigation the role of PARP inhibitors in cancer using in vitro models and clinical samples

  6. Dr Jan Lukas Robertus: Discovery of pre-neoplastic signature in mesothelioma

After the presentations, a lovely lunch and refreshments were provided and it gave all attendees a chance to chat and to get to know each other and, of course, the opportunity to ask the speakers any questions on the presentations.

After lunch, we were taken for a tour of the laboratories to visit where the physical work takes place.

We had the privilege to be able to look at tissues and cells under extremely hi-tech microscopes that are used to examine many different types of cancer cells and tissue biopsies which ultimately lead to a diagnosis.

We also had the opportunity to look at some some of the latest high tech equipment that is used at the university. A fantastic day was had by all and it was great to see patients supporting each other and making friendships.

Thank you once again to the team that made this trip possible.
